Social Justice Making

Justice Cluster Group

In April 2014, a Justice Cluster Group was formed to become involved in issues of Social Justice in our community and in the world. Church of the Resurrection is located in the Rolston Neighbourhood on the Hamilton Mountain. A study of neighbourhood profiles by Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton was undertaken in March 2012 on behalf of the United Way to help them better understand the impoverished lower City of Hamilton neighbourhood “Hubs” they serve. Rolston Neighbourhood was included in the study because it has higher than average poverty rates, in fact the highest on the Mountain, even though it is not formed as a “Hub”. Key findings of this study may be found here.

“The Glory of God is a human being, fully alive”.

We are committed to making a difference to the community and the world in which we live, to play our part in ensuring equality, ending division, challenging unjust systems, providing for those in need, educating ourselves in matters of social justice and helping to shape the world around us to be more like the world God intended for the good of all people. To date our work in this area has included education programs open to the community on issues of

  • mental health,
  • housing,
  • fair trade,
  • food insecurity,
  • LGBTQ positive space training.

We have built and maintain community gardens, provide a support group for vulnerable women in partnership with Neighbour to Neighbour Food Bank, and have started a weekly community lunch. As Christians, we are moving in response to Jesus’ command to love and serve others, and to carry his message of hope further, performing the same healing deeds as he did without exclusion. By doing these things and constantly growing in this ministry, the wider community will come to know that we are Christians by our acts of love!

New volunteers are most welcome! If you have a passion for this ministry and would like to get involved or if you want more information, please contact Nancy Clause at: oneresurrection@rogers.com

Justice Prayer

Gracious God, you created us in your own image.
Give us your grace and enkindle in us the desire to love and serve

        all those entrusted to us.
Help us to seek and maintain justice among all people.
We ask this in your name. Amen

Other Initiatives

  • Campbell's Soup Labels

We will be collecting Campbell's Soup Labels to support the "Labels for Education" program. A collection box will soon be located in the Narthex. For further information please speak to John Martin. Progress updates and further information will be presented soon...stay tuned!

  • Oxfam Stamp Program

Special thanks from Oxfam have been extended to our parish for the almost 10 lbs. of stamps that have been delivered. They are "very pleased with the results", stamps sent have been "interesting" and have included some "scarce material from the Caribbean and Hong Kong". THANK-YOU! With your help, Oxfam is on course to hit its goal of $20,000 again this year. To read the full note and to review Oxfam's most recent project list, please see the Social Justice Board. Please save your postage stamps and put them in the Oxfam Stamp slot (located just outside the elevators).

It is best to leave the stamps on the envelopes. If not, trim no less that 1/4" around the stamp. Together we can stamp out poverty. Helping people help themselves.
